Nondiscrimination policies and promotion and development opportunities are increasingly important factors for heterosexual employees when deciding where to work, a recent study shows.
According to the latest national Out & Equal Workplace survey, most heterosexual adults consider it important that potential employers have a written nondiscrimination policy that includes sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, sex, religion, age and disability. The survey also indicates that the vast majority of heterosexuals agree that an employee should be judged based on job performance rather than sexual orientation. Most also agreed it is important to work for a company that has senior executives who hire, welcome and encourage a diverse workforce. However, the survey also reveals that a third of heterosexuals said their workplace makes it difficult to be openly gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
"Attracting and retaining the best employees possible is what differentiates the success of many companies today," said Out & Equal's executive director Selisse Berry.
